note: My aunt died in an unfortunate car accident about 1 week ago. It’s things like
this that make you realize….if you have a dream in life like getting a good
education go for it, because tomorrow isn’t promised to you.

“If you have the desire, passion and enthusiasm to do something, nothing in the world will stop you.” – Luke Poyner

Finland is a beautiful clean fresh country and prides itself on its environmental awareness and on having the
best education system in the world.

Because of its many quirks, Finland is dubbed ‘Finnwacky’. Where else can you pay a visit to Santa’s home,

see his reindeer team, visit the world’s largest snow castle, and see the Northern lights above a snowy

winter wonderland.

It’s the home of Nokia, and boasts to be the best place for technology learning.
It also claims to have the most internet connections in the world, so if communications and technology is

where you want to be an expert, this is the place for you.

Visas and Permits

As a non-EU student in Finland, you need first need to apply for a 3-month visa to take the entrance exam.
Permits must be obtained through the Finnish Embassy in your own country.

When you are accepted, you need to apply for a student resident permit that is valid for a year. If your

course is longer than one year, you need to re-apply for another year and so on until your studies are

finished.

Extra tips on being accepted

You also need proof that you have at least €6000 available to you. This is based on €500 per month living

costs in Finland, though they are estimated to be nearer €700.

Take note that your application for courses or diplomas has to be sent by mail, e-mails and scans are not

accepted.

Healthcare cover

You must have health insurance cover as a non-EU/EEA student. Without valid cover, your application won’t

be considered.

Accommodation

There’s a choice of student housing in Finland and a central association for housing, http://www.opiskelija-

asunnot.fi/

You can select,
A shared apartment is the cheapest way. Share with two to four people, each with a locked room and

shared kitchen and facilities.
Studio apartment, for a single student but obviously more expensive and there is usually a waiting list.
Group apartment, share with friends with a room each and shared living room and facilities.
A Family apartment, two to three rooms, and a kitchenette, suited for couples or married students with

children.

Cafeterias
The UniCafe restaurants are run by the Student Union HYY. They have restaurants at about twenty

locations in Helsinki.

Meals work out to about two to three Euros for students with a Lyyra Card which gives a 10% discount on

the already government subsidised meals.

Working

As a student, you are allowed to work 25 hours a week during term time and there isn’t a limit during holiday

breaks as long as you remain part-time.

Universities

University of OULO. Nearest to Lapland and furthest north. Business management Sciences and technology

University of Helsinki. In the city for lovers of city life, it covers all courses you could want.

University of Turku. In the West. An international research university founded in 1920. 25,000 students,

1,600 of which are international students from 95 countries.

Kuopio University. In the East. Specialises in health, biotechnology, biosciences, and molecular medicine.

Beyond Sweden: Top Tuition Free Universities in Norway & Finland (Part 1)

Sweden has often been the top Scandinavian destination for students around the world to study.
However, recent changes in Sweden’s tuition free study policies, has made it difficult for some students to study there.

So what are the alternatives?

Consider top universities in Norway and Finland!

In this article, we’ll give you fantastic tips to help you uncover what you need to know about the advantages and disadvantages of universities in both Norway & Finland – the other top countries in Scandinavia with world class Universities.

Bonuses for choosing Norway for your further education

The variety of sport in Norway, especially in winter is fantastic.

In the summer, there is sunlight all day, great if you suffer with SAD.

There’s endless beauty all around and plenty excursions to take.

Norway has a long fascinating history with myths and legends of Vikings.

Famous artists, composers, actors, and innovative architects hail from Norway.

First, you need to decide in what environment you wish to live, in the city, or near to the coast amongst the beautiful fjords and mountains.

Student permits

You’ll need to get a student residence permit from the UDI, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, unless you are just considering summer School for 3 months, in which case you will not need one at all.

Working

Students from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA can apply for a work permit and work for 20 hours a week during term time and full time in semesters or breaks with certain conditions.

Students within the EU/EEA/EFTA automatically get the work permit for 3 months with their student application.

Housing

There are different options for housing
University housing is the cheapest and you will be in the midst of the Universities social life.
You might prefer to live off campus and there are reasonably priced hostels for short term while you look for a permanent residence.

Most of the Norwegian Universities encourage householders to share their homes with foreign students. In this case, you could get lucky and find yourself with a lovely family away from home.

People with rooms, apartments or a house for students to share are encouraged to post them on the notice boards in the Universities for students to study.

Take care when choosing where to live, consider what space you need, what costs are included in the rental, is there a phone, and internet connection?

A tiny room with no desk to spread your projects is no use to you and you will soon feel claustrophobic and lonely.

Healthcare

Healthcare is free to International students staying longer than 3 months.

Cost of living

The cost of living is high in Norway as in all Scandinavian countries.

The bars and restaurants are expensive and close early. Students on a budget cope with this by having ‘vorspiels’ (pre parties) and ‘nachspiels (after parties) in student houses that is a good way to make friends and meet people.

Transport

Public transport in Norway is excellent with trams, buses, trains, subways, and ferries serving all needs.

Students can get monthly passes at discounted fares, or, as many do in the cities, ride a bicycle. This free method of transport is fun and keeps you fit and trim.

Universities

The following four are in the QS World University Rankings and are placed in different parts of the country to help you decide which is best for you.

The University if Oslo is Norway’s oldest University and it is also the largest. It has 30,000 students and boasts four Nobel Prize winners. The BI Norwegian School of Management specialises in business economics and administration, management and marketing.

The University of Bergen…is an urban university. It is divided into two parts, one specialising in medicine and dentistry, the other in natural and social sciences, psychology, law and the arts in the other.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology…as it infers is a centre for technology but also covers all other subjects, music, visual arts, and architecture.

The University of Tromso…specialises in Women’s studies and Women in Research, Arctic Research, Environment, and Development studies, Saami Health Research, and teacher education.

In the next upcoming editiom, you’ll discover how you can take advantage of this information…along with other tips to help you. So stay tuned!

This is an important development! Just a short time ago, the Swedish government has announced that Swedish government has announced that some $2.9 million in international student scholarship funding is going into place.

This money will be used to help offset tuition fees charged to students from developing countries who want to study at Swedish universities.

The Education Minister said, “The quality of our university programmes increase when successful international students participate,”

“Scholarships is a way to attract talented students.”

Starting with the 2011-2012 academic year, students from outside of the European Union can no longer study for free at Swedish universities.

To help offset the costs for talented students as well as those from developing countries, the government also created scholarships totaling 90 million kronor.

Currently, two thirds of the funds originally set aside for scholarships are disbursed through individual universities.

The remaining 30 million kronor (abour $5Million) are managed by the Swedish Institute as part of a general scholarship fund for students from countries listed by the Organisation for Economic Co-

operation and Development as countries in need of foreign aid.

But according to the government’s new spending proposal, the general scholarship fund for students from developing countries would rise to 50 million kronor, a funding increase of 60 percent.

“Through more scholarships we contribute to the increase of the capacity to face economical, political and social challenges in these countries,” Minister for International Development Cooperation,

Gunilla Carlsson said in a statement.

If you want to study in Sweden whether you’re from Africa, Asia, the USA or some other part of the world – you can still apply for scholarships. All is not lost with the new tuition fee change.

Happy (Belated) New Year!

Here’s a guest post featuring tips from George Adonicioaie on insider’s info for getting international student loans.

Two different types of students can profit from international student loans. US residents and non-residents are able to apply for loans that could grant them with the elementary strategies to study abroad. The US education system exert a fascination on lots of foreign students who consider joining a US academy or university the path towards their didactic and professional achievement. Various foreign students decide to live temporarily or even to settle in United States after graduation. International student loans programs were created by the private banking sector and the US Government with the goal to support the multicultural exchanges in academic education.

Since scholarships are limited and are accessible to really talented students with an impressive learning background, there are reasonable alternate options for college students who are eager to learn abroad. So, they have the possibility to pick between a variety of international loans. College students eager to “live the American dream” should check these benefits that can be acquired from applying to international student loans:

* various choice financial assistance

Federal education loans and private loans are sheltered by international student loans for foreigners prepared to join the US academic studies. The eligibility conditions for federal loans are quite demanding, especially for Perkins loans. Federal economic support requirements are more restrictive than international student loans and are less useful due to the high interest rate but the not so common grace period. Private or federal, international students loans reveal the same basic requirements (you should be considered acceptable by an approved college or university across United Sates, and o co-signer, better said co-pledger for your education loan should sing the contract, too).

* multicultural improvement

If you are concerned in experiencing new multicultural adventures and you still want to carry on your educational studies, don ‘t be afraid to get involved in such projects. Your specialized and educational chances are increased through these financial aid programs due to their long-term contribution. The advantages you gain from this worldwide experience does not reflect exclusively in your professional field. These studies might bring you different travel possibilities that may modify your view to the values of life.

* global and regional support

There is a huge quantity of benefits that can be accumulated from the academic multicultural exchanges. This detail has been clearly understood by the public associations and low-income organizations. To support students’ participation authorities elaborated these national and global programs. Another development is the creation of information campaigns intended to clarify the view on international student loans for US residents or foreign students. In case you are interested in an American academic program, check all the possibilities you have, pay more attention to international student loans seeing that they become to be more and more convenient.
